How do I join the Merchant Navy ?

To become an officer, write the Joint Entrance Examination of the IIT's and apply to MERI for Engineers and Chanakya for Deck Officers. Your rank in the examination will be considered for selection. Selected candidates will have to undergo further pre-sea training before joining the career at sea. Ratings i.e other than officers have to undergo pre-sea training in any DGS approved institutes. Graduate mechanical engineers can attend any DGS approved workshops for training prior going to sea.

Central Governmemt letter No.SR-13020/97/2003-MA dated 26/12/2003,decided to allow Foreign Flag Vessels carrying Passengers to more than one Indian Port for a period of 5 years from the date of issue of above letter without obtaining Licence from the DGS under Section 403(3) of M.S.Act, 1958 .
